Colin Self. B. 17 July 1941

Born two and a half miles to the east of Norwich in a forested region. A ‘Nature Boy’.

Deliberately misunderstood by staff as a student at the Slade – when visits from Peter Blake and David Hockney singled his drawings out for praise and their originality, as they literally hated all the other student works, resulting in friendships with them ever since.

Works in the collections of HRH Prince Charles and HM the Queen. Over eighty works in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London. Also over 20 works in the Museum of Modern Art New York. Works in the V&A Museum, the British Museum, Imperial War Museum, Arts Council, British Council, Norwich Castle Museum and many abroad. Hitch-Hiked 8,000 miles coast to coast in USA and Canada as a 20 year old, sleeping out for a quarter of the three month travels. Two years in Germany making ceramics with Mathies Schwarze and a year on and off in remotest Galloway, Scotland making watercolours and some sculpture.
